How I Found My Way into Digital Marketing

I am Poornima Stanley. Welcome to my story of how I became a digital marketer in Dubai. My journey into digital marketing was not something I planned from the beginning—it evolved through experiences, pauses, and rediscovery. I was born and raised in Calicut, a place that will always feel like home. After completing my graduation in Chemistry in 2004, like many fresh graduates, I stood at the crossroads of ambition and uncertainty. With a degree in hand and very little clarity about what lay ahead, I was simply looking for an opportunity to begin my professional journey.

That first opportunity came from Cochin. I still remember boarding the train from Calicut, carrying a suitcase full of clothes and a heart full of mixed emotions—excitement, anxiety, fear, and hope. It was my first time stepping away from home for work, and I was about to start my career in a call center handling a US-based process. The night shifts were challenging, and the work environment was completely new to me, but it was also my first real exposure to corporate life.

Those three and a half years taught me invaluable lessons. From communication and discipline to teamwork and handling pressure, the experience shaped my professional foundation. It was more than just a job; it was where I learned how workplaces function and how individuals grow when pushed beyond their comfort zones.

After resigning from my first role, I moved on to another opportunity in Cochin. In this role, I was responsible for managing a team of tele-callers focused on lead generation, and later I moved on to handle the customer care team as well. Over the next two and a half years, I gained a deeper understanding of customer behavior, relationship management, and the importance of clear communication. These experiences, though not directly related to marketing at the time, would later prove to be extremely relevant.

Life then took a beautiful turn. After getting married, I relocated to Dubai and began a new chapter, both personally and professionally. I joined a financial services company and became part of the Brand Management department. This marked my first true exposure to the world of marketing.

Coming from a science background, stepping into marketing was both exciting and intimidating. My responsibilities included handling global branding requests from stakeholders, coordinating with various teams within the marketing department, managing design requirements with the internal branding team, working against tight deadlines, and coordinating with vendors for printing and production. Every day brought something new to learn.

Despite the challenges, this role sparked a genuine interest in marketing—especially branding. It fascinated me how strategy, creativity, and consistency could shape a brand’s identity. Slowly, a girl with a chemistry degree found herself deeply engaged in marketing conversations, processes, and outcomes.

Then motherhood called, and I made the conscious decision to take a break from my career. What I initially thought would be a short pause extended into a long break of nearly seven years. While the time was meaningful, it eventually gave way to restlessness and boredom. I realized that I wanted to return to work—not just for a job, but for something that truly excited me.

Restarting after a long break was not easy. I knew one thing clearly: if I was going to begin again, it had to be in a field that was dynamic, challenging, and continuously evolving. I did not want a role that felt repetitive or stagnant.

That is when digital marketing entered my life—almost unexpectedly—through social media reels. Curious, I started researching more about the field. The more I explored, the more intrigued I became. Digital marketing felt like the perfect blend of creativity, strategy, analytics, and constant learning.

I decided to formally upskill by enrolling in a digital marketing course. What drew me in was the fact that learning in this field never stops. Platforms change, algorithms evolve, trends shift, and there is always something new to discover. It keeps you on your toes and pushes you to grow continuously.

Today, when I look back at my journey—from a chemistry graduate in Calicut to a digital marketing professional in Dubai—I see how every phase of my career contributed to where I am now. None of the experiences were wasted; each one added a layer to my understanding of people, processes, and communication.

This journey has taught me that careers are not always linear, and that it is never too late to reinvent yourself. Sometimes, all it takes is curiosity, courage, and the willingness to start again.
